Perry is she is Chicago native birthed to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. On the ABC sitcom Roseanne (as shown in flashback), her mother portrayed Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. Her parents, however, were not keen to let her take on acting roles until she was an adult fearing the effect of stress. Perry claimed that she was timid to perform during high school, but started doing shows at Northwestern University as a way to make friends after transferring from Boston University. After graduating Perry went into New York to search for TV work, landing a few roles on series such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent however, her homesickness led the actress back to California and she was able to find theater jobs. Perry was a part of Broadway in The Other Place with her mother in the year 2013. Perry was in the show with the father of her character Kevin McKidd and Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the year 2015 on The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble, West Los Angeles. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry starred in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. She also played her older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon which was an CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. Despite her family link to the character she got the role through an audition.
